Ebay Heads Up--Model 14's

Good looking pair of Model 14's. He wrote (transcribed?) some nice info about Model 14's in general--well worth reading. Bidding is at $405 right now, if bidding doesn't go too crazy, these would be well worth the money. Not sure if we have any members in Arizona, but I like the fact that he's capping the shipping cost at $200 for the pair even though it will cost him more than that to ship them (although, personally, I don't usually like to buy speakers that I can't listen to/test first, and drive home myself)......

Wow-that would have been a great deal..... Those cabs are in nice shape--if the crossovers and h.f. drivers were in as good of shape--a GPA recone of the woofers and it still would have been a bargain. I wonder what could have happened to those woofers--when you enlarge the photos they look blue and slimey (mold maybe)? Luckily he left the original woofers in there to be restored rather than installing cheap replacements like a lot of people do with blown woofers.....

foam rot and little bastards(the kind that push dustcaps in). I suspect the cones are probably junk, but if they weren't too creased/weakened the woofers could be refoamed and new dustcaps installed. With several Altecs it's worth the effort to preserve the original cones as the new ones are NOT the same, and don't sound the same. That "blue" BTW, is the correct color for those cones, different cameras and lighting can really exaggerate the hue. I've been "beating up" on my 15's a bit lately, powering them with a Nak Stasis PA-5II, while they're not quite everything the model 14's are, they are a good bit of fun never the less.

You're right--it looks like someone took out the 13.5" frame "stock" woofer, cut a bigger hole in the baffle and stuck in a 15" woofer in it's place. I'm afraid to think what kind of mismatch/mutant they've created..... Not to mention it's now not very easy to get a stock woofer installed without making a new baffle (or making some serious mods). There should be an SPCA--SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ALTECS....
